Land Purchased for a New Center in the Bay Area
Dhamma Santosa

After evaluating more than 40 properties over the last 4 years, the Bay Area Vipassana Trust is happy to announce that we have purchased land for a Vipassana Meditation Center in the Bay Area. The new center land is called Dhamma Santosa , which means happiness, contentment, satisfaction and joy. The development of a center in this conveniently accessible, peaceful location will enable more people from the Bay Area and beyond to develop in Dhamma by providing more opportunities to sit and serve.

The price for the land is $2.1M which we were able to purchase with old student donations. Soon after the purchase, we will initiate the Conditional Use Permit process with the County. The preliminary budget for obtaining a CUP is estimated to be $200K-$350K over the next 12-24 months. An estimated $8M in additional donations will be required to complete the first phase of center development for up to 80 students.

Centrally located in California
close to San Jose

The 54 acres property is located off of Redwood Retreat Road in a rural area in Gilroy. The property is 35 miles from San Jose airport, 65 miles from San Francisco or Oakland airport and 30 miles from Santa Cruz.

PHASE 1
The price of the land is $2.1M. Additionally, we would need about $8M for Phase 1 construction.

Soon after the purchase, we will initiate the Conditional Use Permit process with the County.

There is a large barn on the property, which could be converted into a multi-purpose building for use while the rest of the center is built up over time.

PHASE 2
The goal would be to expand the capacity of the center to
accommodate a total of 150 students, servers, and teachers,
which would be done in future development phases as
donations become available.
